We have been hearing rumors about Samsung working on its smartwatch for quite some time, and now a new rumor suggests that the company might call its wearable device brand as the Gear. Phandroid has stumbled upon Samsung’s application for a new trademark name – Samsung Gear – which is believed be registered for its alleged wrist gears or watches.
Though there is no confirmation on this and it could merely be a false buzz, yet the name somewhat hints at something beyond a phone or a tablet. And considering the ongoing rumors surrounding Samsung’s smartwatches, there is a high possibility of Gears being the sub-brand for that category of devices. Samsung is expected to announce its smartwatch at IFA along with the Galaxy Note III. That event is expected to happen on September 4 in Berlin.
Apple has been in news for registering the iWatch trademark, while last week Google was reported to be working on an OUYA-like smartwatch. However, Sony has taken the lead by actually announcing a smartwatch at last week’s Mobile Asia Expo. Foxconn, Apple’s long time contract manufacturing partner, also announced its own version of a smartwatch recently, beating Apple to it.
